Welcome to Troop 616's web site

We have put together this information to help you get acquainted with Troop 616. Our troop offers monthly adventures such as camping, backpacking, snowboarding, canoeing, white water rafting, cycling, fishing, rock climbing and shooting model rockets. Troop 616 also provides bi-monthly meetings filled with hands-on activities, games and planning for upcoming weekend activities. By participating in the weekend activities and Troop meetings, Scouts have fun, create lasting friendships, and learn important skills. Scouts learn skills that range from cooking at a campout, to using a compass, to learning first aid techniques. Specific skills are described in your Boy Scout Handbook. Scouts are recognized for their achievements by advancing to higher level ranks, earning merit badges, and dozens have reached the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.

The 8 Methods of Scouting - from Mr. Madison

Posted on May 12 2012 - 8:38pm

The Eight Methods of Scouting

1. Ideals
Each Scout commits himself to the personal behavior guides and standards in the Scout motto, the slogan, the Oath and the Law

2. Patrols
Patrols give Scouts experience in teamwork, democracy and leadership.

3. Outdoors
Scouting emphasizes outdoors activities which foster an appreciation of nature and our ecology. Along the way, Scouts practice and learn new skills and develop confidence in their own abilities to cope with obstacles. Scouting is outing!

4. Advancement
The advancement program provides Scouts with a ladder of skills to climb at his own pace. On the way up, he has many opportunities to learn and to be recognized for his achievements.

5. Personal growth
All of the other methods contribute to the personal growth of a Scout through experience. The quest for growth is a method, too.

6. Adult association
Adult leaders, male and female, provide an example to Scouts of the high character they should strive for in their personal growth.

7. Leadership development
Making boys get leadership experiences is one of the most valuable things Scouting does.

8. Uniform
The uniform reminds a Scout of who he is and what is expected of him. It identifies him as part of a patrol, troop, council and worldwide youth movement. He can take pride in being a Scout, and in the achievements shown on his uniform and sash. Even neighborhood gangs recognize the importance of wearing a uniform, their colors.

Orange County Coastkeeper - Service Hours

Posted on May 4 2012 - 6:54pm

Orange County Coastkeeper

Hello! I'm with Orange County Coastkeeper and I want to introduce you to
the volunteer opportunities available at our Coastkeeper Garden.  We are
always seeking the support of enthusiastic volunteers, and we even have an
event that could be lots of fun for your troop. We have a special  Mother's
Day event, which will be held at the garden from 8:00am to 12:00pm on May
13th. We encourage all volunteers and their mothers to come outside on
this special day and give back to the community while entering in a chance
to win a $50 dollar gift card to True Foods Kitchen at Fashion Island!  We
will be supplying refreshments and snacks for volunteers so you can avoid
those crowded Mother's Day brunches.  Volunteering at this event will be a
great way to enjoy the outdoors, help our organization and the environment,
all the while spending quality time with Mom.

Orange County Coastkeeper is a non-profit organization devoted to keeping
Orange County’s creeks, rivers, bays and ocean clean! Our work
encompasses a variety of projects in education, advocacy, restoration,
research, and enforcement. In our mission to create awareness about
environmental issues and reduce pollution in Orange County‘s watersheds
and coastal waters, we are building a 2.5-acre demonstration garden
located in Santiago Canyon College. This garden will educate the community
on how they can contribute in protecting the environment and its natural
resources through California Friendly landscaping that conserves water and
eliminates polluted urban runoff.  Education within the garden will be
obtained through public workshops, field trips, and classes on local
natural history.  There will also be a natural play area to encourage
children to play outdoors again. With support from volunteers and
donations, we plan to have this garden open to the public by July 2012.
If your troop is interested in volunteering for this event, please RSVP to
me, Pamela Crouch, by May 10th at pamela@coastkeeper.org or call
714-850-1965. Do feel free to contact me if you would like to set up a
separate day for troops to volunteer; we also host monthly beach cleanups.
Please visit our website for more info about our organization,
www.coastkeeper.org. We thank you for your support and I look forward to
building a relationship with Boy Scouts of Orange County.
